Plants growing wild have spread across the empty cages. The perspective is chosen to place the exotic fauna landscaping the animal enclosures as the dominant feature in the foreground of these paintings. In places, the thick, dense application of paint creates the impression that the branches merge with the grid of bars and overhead lights. In the works of the Untitled series, these stylistic choices create inextricably related contradictions between interior and exterior, structure and fragmentation, control and freedom.
The cage is an existential motif and simultaneously provides a formal underpinning in these paintings. The multiple strata of this spatial configuration reflect both a sense of constraint and unfettered creative growth.
